It's not very clear. Riffael didn't offer an explanation before he'd left, but he'd been acting strangely before this, though...he was burning Miss Merry's things in the garden a few days ago and sporting odd injuries. And he was meeting with a girl who is supposed to be connected to all the vampire killings.
