Well, it seems I may have to burn down yet another laboratory of mine. This'll be the second time this month.

It's not like I was even the one who killed those girls, but oh well.

But he still forgave you? That's good, then.

I...don't feel like I deserve it.

That man said that he understood, that he'd betrayed someone he loved before, too, and that he didn't think I was that horrible.

No. I enjoy my work, but to pretend that what I do for a living makes me anything less than terrible would be delusional.

Most people try to justify what they do, even if they're terrible. I know I did.

I don't. There would be no way to justify the things I've done. I know what I am and what crimes I've committed, but I don't care.

If there's no justification, why do you do it?

Because I want to or because I'm ordered to. I don't care if there's no justification for what I do.

In any event, I would say that you aren't so very terrible. Or that you don't give off that impression. Perhaps your friend thought likewise.

I did try to destroy an entire city and start a war between the two most powerful Empires in the world.

Ion is too soft. He always has been. Even...even if he forgave me, that doesn't mean I deserve it.

Perhaps. But it's an indicator that you might.

I was tricked into believing that it was best for my people. And then...I was angry and stubborn, and refused to see that I was wrong.

So you thought you were doing what was best for your people...that doesn't sound so very terrible.

I guess so. It's not so much that I feel I must be terrible, I suppose, but that I must be ridiculously stupid to have been so taken in.

Everyone can be misled with the right kind of persuasion. I can't say if yours was egregious, but expert manipulators can be rather cunning in luring in believers, especially if you thought it was for such a cause as yours.

Are you done with all of your preparations? I suppose I feel better, now, if you still need me.

It's all finished. All that's left to be done is destroy the building.
