It was, relatively speaking, a calm day for Jezebel. His father had seen no need to summon him for any reason, which was fortunate. None of the other Delilah members had sought to bother him for some petty grudge or unnecessary nuisance. And, so far, Cain had not done anything that would require him to dispose of some evidence. Again.

So, it was not a bad day at all, really.

He'd needed to make a run for supplies -- it was so easy to run out of syringes and vials and poisonous ingredients, after all. He had brought Cassian with him for an extra set of hands. As the day slowly began to approach evening, they made their way back to Delilah, carrying the day's wares.

On the way back, Jezebel's attention was grabbed by an auction of some kind being set up. Animals of various types were being sold at some sort of outdoor market. A few were in cages, but others were merely set up in temporary pens. There were a few horses, a cow or two, and several dogs that were clearly being sold as ratcatchers or sheep herders.

Jezebel couldn't help but glance at them. Nearing one of the pens, he reached out to pet one of the larger dogs, which panted happily before licking his hand.

Calm days were rare things and he was finding he actually enjoyed this one. No work, no Hargreaves and his lap dog, just a day that could almost be called normal, if they weren't them.

Laden in bags, Cassian followed along at Jezebel's side and stopped when he did, unsurprised by what was behind their pause. the doctor and his animals.

"He likes you." Also unsurprising, Cassian hadn't met an animal that disliked Jezebel.

Jezebel's mouth tilted in a way that almost resembled a smile. Not that he wasn't already betraying his enjoyment, standing there and letting the dog happily lick his palm. "I imagine you're right, Cassian," he said, his own contentment shown by the lack of dourness in his tone.

He wished he had treats for some of them in his pockets. They seemed bored and possibly hungry waiting for the auction to start. One of the smaller ones came trotting up and Jezebel scooped him up without hesitation, assuming the auctioneers were not paying attention. The dog immediately began to lick Jezebel's face before squirming happily to look at the world around him, yipping at Cassian happily.

Cassian reached out to pet the dog as he re-positioned himself to use his body to hide Jezebel and the dog from any unwanted eyes. He would never get tired of being able to do things like that.

After a moment, he remembered the small piece of bread left in a paper sack in his coat's pocket. It had been part of his lunch, but he wouldn't miss it. Cassian retrieved the sack and broke a small chunk off to feed to the dog who seemed more than happy to receive the treat.

"Here. You wanna do it?" He offered the bag to Jezebel in case he wanted to feed the other dogs. It was really more his thing than Cassians, although he'd be lying if he tried to deny the smile that had briefly appeared when the dog had gobbled the bread up.

Jezebel's mouth quirks into something almost resembling a smile as Cassian shields him from sight of anyone else. Really, he was quite the perfect assistant, sometimes. He shielded Jezebel far better than Jezebel would ever ask for outright, and he did it without question.

And he also carried food for animals when Jezebel needed it, as well, apparently.

"I suppose," Jezebel said, pretended not to be as clearly delighted as he actually was. He accepted the bread gratefully before taking some and balling it in his fingers to hold out to one of the dogs in the pen. One of them slurped it up immediately, and the rest of the group bounded over when they realized a new food source had arrived. Jezebel chuckled before taking more chunks out of the bread and holding out to the pack.
